Why Moldara
Two rare stones that have to meet
Pairing moldavite with Libyan desert glass sounds simple. The hard part is sourcing both so that they genuinely belong together.
Field moldavite comes from South Bohemian localities, Libyan desert glass from the sand sea on the Egyptian and Libyan border. Both lie on the surface or just beneath it and both carry the mark of the ground that held them: moldavite the pitted drawing of soil, the glass a matte etching by sand. Two different impacts, two different centuries of discovery, two entirely different characters of material. The green is deep and opaque, the gold lets light through, which is exactly why the ratio, the size and the tone have to be tuned, or one stone overwhelms the other.
Both materials are worked separately in our atelier and just as slowly: tumbling and hand polishing take roughly fifty days per piece. Only then is the bracelet assembled. Every piece states the carat weight of both stones separately and comes with a certificate of authenticity carrying a serial number and a QR code that resolves to it.
You wear two ancient events on one wrist, fifteen million years apart. That is not an advertising phrase, it is a description of what you are holding.

How to choose a moldavite and Libyan desert glass bracelet
Two tektites, two separate impacts, two colours on one wrist. In this collection it is not only size that decides, but above all the ratio of the two stones, and that changes the whole character of the piece.
Wrist size
Bracelets with Libyan desert glass are bulkier than pure moldavite ones, so do not guess the length. Measure your wrist and add 1 to 1.5 cm.

- 18 cmA larger bracelet that fits almost any woman’s hand, and the choice for anyone who likes a looser fit.

The ratio of the two stones
This is the most important choice in this collection. When moldavite prevails, the bracelet stays green and the glass works as a golden accent. When Libyan desert glass prevails, the whole piece lightens and turns golden. The ratio is given in carats on every piece: 30.9 ct of moldavite to 42.3 ct of glass is a balanced pair, while 36 ct to 81 ct is a bracelet ruled by the glass.
Carat weight
Total weight decides how the bracelet reads on the hand. On combined pieces the weight of both stones adds up, so you reach higher figures than with pure moldavite at the same visual size. Libyan desert glass is more translucent and reads lighter than it weighs.
Tumbled pieces or beads
Tumbled Libyan desert glass keeps an irregular shape and in a bracelet looks like pieces of amber lit from within. Cut beads are regular, line up smoothly and the whole reads cleaner. Both versions are in this collection.
The contrast you want to wear
Green and gold side by side is a bold pairing. If you are after a quieter piece, choose pure moldavite. If you want the contrast sharper still, look at the combination with obsidian, where solid black stands against the green.
Carats and grams
How to read the weight of two stones
Both stones are weighed in carats and we state them separately on every piece. One carat is 0.2 grams, five carats make one gram. A bracelet with 30.75 ct of moldavite and 38.95 ct of glass therefore weighs just under 14 grams in total.

The first figure is always moldavite, the second Libyan desert glass. To compare two pieces, add both figures, then look at the ratio, because that decides the colour of the bracelet more than the sum does.

What is Libyan desert glass and where does it come from?
It is a tektite, the same type of stone as moldavite, meaning natural glass formed when the Earth's surface melted under an impact from space. Libyan desert glass formed roughly 29 million years ago above what is now the Sahara, and it can be found in only one area of the world, in the sand sea on the Egyptian and Libyan border. It is not mined, it is collected from the desert surface, piece by piece.
How do I recognise genuine Libyan desert glass?
It is translucent, in shades from almost colourless to deep honey, and against light it shows fine fibrous structures and elongated bubbles. The surface tends to be matte, etched by sand, so before polishing it looks clouded. Imitations are usually too clear, have perfectly round bubbles and lack any internal drawing. With us every piece comes with a certificate stating the carat weight of both stones.
How quickly will the piece arrive?
We dispatch a packed and prepared parcel within 24 hours of the order. Within the Czech Republic delivery usually takes two days, the exact time depends on the carrier. We ship abroad as well, where delivery times vary by destination. For pieces adjusted to order we confirm the date by email as soon as we accept the order.
Can I return or exchange a piece?
You have 14 days from delivery and you do not need to explain why. The piece simply needs to be unworn and in its original packaging including the certificate. We refund within a few days of the parcel reaching us. For custom made pieces we agree individually, though it has never happened that we failed to agree.
Why do combined bracelets list two carat weights?
Because they are two different stones with a different price and a different character. The first figure is always moldavite, the second Libyan desert glass. The ratio between them decides the resulting colour more than the total weight does: the more glass, the lighter and more golden the bracelet, the more moldavite, the greener it stays. Adding both figures gives you the total carat weight, and dividing by five gives the weight in grams.
Is Libyan desert glass rarer than moldavite?
Both are rare and both have a single source in the world. Libyan desert glass is roughly twice as old and comes from one desert area where it is collected off the surface. Moldavite has its strewn field in Southern Bohemia and is picked out of sandy layers. Neither will ever form again. For both, price follows mainly the clarity and size of the individual stone, not which of them is older.

What if the bracelet does not fit?
We adjust it free of charge. Write to us, send the bracelet back and we shorten or lengthen it to your wrist. The same goes for replacing the elastic cord. We do that for life and without a fee, because elastic gives way on every bracelet eventually and that is no reason for it to end up in a drawer.
