An obsidian bracelet reads differently when the black is broken by green. These pieces combine obsidian, glass formed in a volcano, with moldavite thrown out of a meteorite impact 14.5 million years ago. Two kinds of natural glass, two entirely different origins, on one wrist.

Everything is handmade with attention to every detail.

Why Moldara
Green next to black forgives very little. When the lustre, the size or the ratio is off, you see it at first glance.
Obsidian polishes to an almost mirror surface, moldavite keeps a sculpted, more matte structure. For the two to work side by side, both have to be finished properly, and that is work you cannot rush. In our atelier both stones therefore go through the same roughly fifty day tumbling and hand polishing, each separately, and only then is the bracelet assembled.
The rare part of the piece is the moldavite. Obsidian forms wherever there is a volcano and it is still forming today. Moldavite formed once and its South Bohemian deposits are largely worked out. That is why we state the carat weight of both stones separately on every piece, and why a certificate of authenticity with a serial number and a QR code accompanies every bracelet: so you know exactly what you are paying for.
Natural glass from a volcano and natural glass from space. The same material, two entirely different ways of coming into being.
South Bohemian localities, carat weight stated, no anonymous import.
Each stone separately, to its own surface and lustre.
You see how many carats are moldavite and how many are obsidian.

Choosing guide
Green and black, two natural glasses side by side. One formed in a volcano, the other in a meteorite impact. In this collection the ratio of the two stones decides, along with how strong a contrast you want to wear.
Obsidian beads are regular, so the bracelet sits predictably. Measure your wrist anyway and add 1 to 1.5 cm.
The photographs with models show how this looks in reality. They have rather small wrists, so you can judge from them how the bracelet will sit on you.
The more obsidian, the quieter and more formal the bracelet: black calms the green and lifts it as an accent. The more moldavite, the more colourful and livelier the piece. In our combined bracelet the two stones are almost equal: 34.25 ct of moldavite and 33.65 ct of obsidian.
On a combination the weight of both stones adds up. Obsidian is dense and feels heavier in the hand than moldavite of the same size, so a bracelet with a balanced ratio has a solid but not massive presence on the wrist.
Obsidian polishes to a high, almost mirror lustre, and against the more sculpted moldavite this creates a contrast that is not only in colour but in surface. That difference is what makes the combination interesting close up, not just in a photograph.
If you want a piece that carries only green, choose from the Moldavites collection. If you want contrast but warmer, look at Libyan desert glass, where gold stands against the green instead of black.
Carats and grams
Both stones are weighed in carats. One carat is 0.2 grams, five carats make one gram. A bracelet with 34.25 ct of moldavite and 33.65 ct of obsidian therefore weighs about 13.6 grams in total.
| Carat weight | In grams | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 34.25 ct moldavite | 6.9 g | The green component, stones from Southern Bohemia |
| 33.65 ct obsidian | 6.7 g | The black component, volcanic glass with a high lustre |
| 67.9 ct in total | 13.6 g | A balanced bracelet, 18 cm |
| 5 ct | 1 g | The basic conversion, useful with any piece |
On combined pieces we state both weights separately, because each stone has a different price. Moldavite is the rarer of the two: obsidian is beautiful, but it forms wherever there is a volcano.
We adjust anything on request. A different length, a different arrangement of stones, a different carat weight: length, weight and composition can all be made to measure. And if one of the natural, unpolished moldavites catches your eye, we will set it for you as a pendant. Write to us and we will work it out.

I'm completely satisfied. The bracelet feels beautifully made and is very comfortable to wear. It also arrived in a lovely box — highly recommended.
Thank you for the beautiful bracelet. The moldavite beads are perfectly smooth and lovely to the touch, just as Moldara promises. I wear it every day. Thank you so much.
Dear Moldara, thank you for the gorgeous moldavite bracelet. The stones are beautifully smooth and glossy, and it looks wonderful on the wrist. The packaging was lovely and delighted me the moment I opened it. I couldn't be happier.
FAQ
Natural volcanic glass. It forms when lava flows out and cools so fast that no crystals have time to grow and the material sets like glass. Hence its solid black colour, conchoidal fracture and the ability to polish to an almost mirror surface that no other black stone has.
For contrast and kinship at once. Both stones are natural glass, so they sit well together in structure and lustre, yet in colour they stand opposed: deep green against solid black. Black also calms the green, so the bracelet reads more formally than a purely moldavite one and works with a suit or a black dress. The surfaces differ too, obsidian is mirror smooth while moldavite keeps a more sculpted texture.
Always, and for the full value of the piece. Moldavite jewellery runs into tens of thousands of crowns, so we send nothing uninsured. The insurance is part of the shipping price and you pay nothing extra for it. If anything happens to the parcel, we deal with it, not you.
We adjust it free of charge. Write to us, send the bracelet back and we shorten or lengthen it to your wrist. The same goes for replacing the elastic cord. We do that for life and without a fee, because elastic gives way on every bracelet eventually and that is no reason for it to end up in a drawer.
It is not and we do not claim otherwise. Obsidian forms anywhere with volcanic activity, in Iceland, Mexico or Armenia, and it is still forming today. Moldavite formed once, 14.5 million years ago, and its South Bohemian deposits are largely worked out. That is why the price of a combined bracelet follows mainly the moldavite part, and why we state the carat weight of both stones separately on every piece.
Both stones are glass with a hardness around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, so they scratch against harder materials, most often other jewellery in a drawer. Take the bracelet off for sport and manual work, avoid direct contact with perfume, and clean it with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Thanks to its high lustre obsidian keeps its look for years, provided you do not store it loose among metal pieces.
Every bracelet rests in a decorative green box with gold detailing, set inside a larger magnetic gift box tied with our signature ribbon. Along with the certificate of authenticity you find a carefully produced booklet inside. It tells the story of moldavite's cosmic origin and invites you to explore the 14.5 million year journey of the rare stone you now hold in your hands.
